Announcement - Class Cancellation

SCCC has cancelled all day and evening classes for Monday, Dec. 21 (tomorrow). Wednesday, Dec. 23 is listed as the make-up day. Anyone who has not submitted final projects yet may do so anytime Tuesday or Wednesday by dropping of your work in the classroom. Please leave your work with a note indicating your name and class in order to prevent any confusion.

Alternatively, you can email photos of your piece to me. Be sure to include multiple views and details, as well as your name and the class you are in. (It would be a good idea to email photos of your project to me, whether you drop it off or not...) Just like finished projects being dropped off, photos of projects are due by Wednesday at 6PM.

If I don't see you, have a good holiday!

As a result of last week's course cancellations, all project due dates will be postponed accordingly and will be discussed in class. This includes the in progress critique that is scheduled for tomorrow during Portfolio Development (be prepared to work on your capstone projects, photographing artwork, or artist statement revisions).

However, the studios are monitored today from 3:30PM until 5:30PM and, as such, students are encouraged to continue working on projects during these hours. Please be sure to sign in with the monitor so that he/she is aware of your presence.

Visiting Artist: Ruby Sky Stiler

The Art Club we will be hosting our first visiting artist of the year on Monday, October 26. The lecture will be in Southampton Rm. 24 at 1:00 pm, and will be about an hour-hour and a half.

The artist is Ruby Sky Stiler, a sculptor and trained printmaker.

Sculpture students please note that I am postponing our critique until Wednesday, Sept. 30. This will give us one more in-class work day (this Wednesday) before your projects are due.

Announcement

There will be a quiz administered next Wednesday (Sept. 23) and Thursday (Sept. 24) in each 3D Design and Sculpture class. When the first assignment (Transformer or Modules) was introduced in each class you were asked to explore the list of featured artists on each respective assignment page of the blog. The quiz will pertain to the artists on these lists. Be prepared with artist names and the ability to describe some of the artwork beyond basic generalizations. Happy hunting!

Research Assignment

When 12-year-old Max Wallack of Natick heard of WGBH’s Design Squad “Trash to Treasure” design contest, he was ready to give his best shot. He stole the show with his “Home Dome” innovation, which is primarily a shelter for the homeless or refugees made from plastic, wire and packing peanuts. This project addresses humanitarian need and it does it by removing non-biodegradable materials from our waste stream. The makeshift dwelling is in the form of a Mongolian yurt and features a built-in bed. For this innovative design, Max won $10,000, a Dell laptop, and a trip to Boston to work with engineers and see his design realized.

Damien Hirst's Offbeat Art Fetches $125 Million
British artist Damien Hirst's latest work of art has sold for $100 million to an unnamed investment group and Hirst will reportedly get paid in cash. "For the Love of God" is a life-size cast of a human skull in platinum and covered by 8,601 pave-set diamonds weighing 1,106.18 carats. The single large diamond in the middle of the forehead is reportedly worth $4.2 million alone. Hirst financed the project himself, and estimates it cost between 10 and 15 million.
